The Port of Cartagena, reference port for south east Spain, has a key geostrategic position in the communication routes between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, between Europe and Africa, and inland routes between North America, Europe and Asia, which makes it one of the natural entrance routes to Europe.

The Port of Cartagena is divided into two inner harbours: Cartagena Inner Harbour and Escombreras Inner Harbour. The Cartagena inner harbour deals with the traffic for general cargo, containers and the tourist cruise ships. The Escombreras inner harbour deals with the traffic for bulk liquids and solids.

Concession policy

Concessions are regulated by Royal Legislative Decree 2/2011 (articles 81 to 95). These articles provide that the occupation of the port public domain will be subject to a prior concession granted by the Port Authority. The term of the concession may not be greater than 50 years, taking into account the following criteria: Link to the port activity, availability of space, volume of investment, time needed for execution of the works, adaptation to the port planning and management, increase of activity generated and useful life of the investment.
Exceptionally, extensions may be authorised that together with the initial period may exceed a term of 50 years. The request for a concession must be accompanied by an economic-financial activity report, as well as a basic project of the activity to be performed.
For any query, or more information, contact the Public Domain Department of the Port of Cartagena.
